I think it was two-fold. At first, in the top, he was just… his first instinct was to figure out what was happening, why is Ric dying, no, THIS IS HIS FRIEND DAMNIT, he wasn’t thinking in terms of “enemy.”  His first instinct was still ALARIC. And then… Ric, Ric. And it sunk in. Why is Ric dying? Why would that…. Oh crap. Elena. Not just Ric dying. ELENA.

Ric, no, you’re not allowed to die.

And you can’t die because that means…
